A Simple Little Meme...

I’ve been tagged by Ken for this “get-to-know-you” meme. As usual there are rules and they are:

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

But since rules are meant to be broken. I shall not be following rule #3 as stated.

1) What was I doing 10 yrs ago?
Moved to the beach and found a job, began volunteer work to get involved in the community. My (then) partner stayed at his job in order to secure domestic partner benefits. He retired and moved here as well, the following year.

2) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):
1. Fill-up the car before work. (Whimper!)
2. Check for Itinerary of July trip. (Counting the days)
3. Balance checkbook.
4. Prep ingredients for slow cooker for tomorrow. (not done)
5. Try to figure out how to connect the VCR/DVD to DirecTV box. (not as easy as I thought.)

3) Snacks I enjoy: Pretzels, Cantaloupe, Grapes, peanut butter on saltines (from childhood) Cashews, Dutch licorice, and Dark Chocolate.

4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
1. Set up a way to help low income senior citizens pay for whatever they need.
2. Support a local organization that supplies aid to mothers with little means and their infants.
3. Find and pay college tuition for high school seniors who otherwise would find a college education out of their grasp.
4. Take my dream cruise to Alaska and Australia, and visit Holland once more before I die.
5. Pay off my best friends debts and promote her writing.
6. Buy a townhouse in a gay-friendly community.
7. And I, like Ken, would Fund AIDS research.

5) Three of my bad habits:
1. Summer= Gin & Tonic; Winter= Perfect Manhattan
2. My snarky sense of humor.
3. Promoting the intrinsic worth of the BBC-TV series Torchwood to people who could care less. Oh, well.

Hillary's GLBT Problem

John Aravosis, over at Americablog asks, and answers:

My friend Phil Attey asks why Obama keeps mentioning gays and lesbians in his speeches - speeches he makes to the public at large, not just gay audiences - and Hillary never does. Phil writes:

Last month, a gay Philadelphian LGBT publisher raised the issue that Senator Obama, though often addressing LGBT issues and including us in his major speeches, was not granting his publication an exclusive interview. Senator Obama quickly addressed the issue and granted an exclusive interview to the national LGBT publication, The Advocate.

Tonight, following the Pennsylvania Primary, Senator Obama once again showed his commitment to our community by including us in his address to the nation. Senator Clinton, speech, once again, did not include us, and it brings up the issue that hers never do.

Phil is right. Obama mentions us in his speeches, a lot. And yes, Hillary will say those are just words. But you know, Obama was willing to chastize his own community for their homophobia in a speech given on Martin Luther King's birthday in MLK's own church to thousands of black leaders. Those are words that matter. Here's to hoping that Hillary can find it in herself to utter the word gay (and even lesbian) in a setting that isn't limited to a gay audience.

Luke and Noah..Finally!!!

The Luke and Noah Controversy had died down, oh but now "the kiss" has been broadcast and clearly sent the fundies into a spittle-flecked frenzy. How do I know? Well, when I receive email from the American Family Association's Donald Wildmon (no links to hate sites) I know it has to be about homosexuality. That's all he ever writes about. Never anything of substance that real hard working families can actually use to make life better all round.

With the title "Procter and Gamble promotes explicit open-mouth homosexual kissing." Well, I was guessing that it was all about teh GAY. And sure enough, Wildmon doesn't disappoint. Here's the clip:

OK, so the kiss is sweet and cute, however it's obvious that real open-mouth homo kissing has not been seen by the knuckle-draggers at the AFA.

Now that Luke & Noah have had their on screen kiss, we can all go back to our jobs, gardens, and lives secure in the knowledge that, after cleaning up the mess made when their heads exploded, the AFA will take it from here. I feel safe again. How about you?

Rice Rationing?

One may not purchase more than 4 20 pound bags of rice. OK, but this makes no sense in the USA right now. And what family buys rice in 20 pound bags? This is from HuffPo:

The two biggest U.S. warehouse retail chains are limiting how much rice customers can buy because of what Sam's Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., called on Wednesday "recent supply and demand trends."

The broader chain of Wal-Mart stores has no plans to limit food purchases, however.

The move comes as U.S. rice futures hit a record high amid global food inflation, although one rice expert said the warehouse chains may be reacting less to any shortages than to stockpiling by restaurants and small stores.

Sam's Club followed Seattle-based Costco Wholesale Corp., which put limits in at least some stores on bulk rice purchases.

Sam's Club declined to say if this is first time it has restricted sales of bulk foods. The limits affect 20-pound bags, not retail-sized portions. Costco President and CEO Jim Sinegal declined to discuss the issue Wednesday with an AP reporter.

Sam's Club said it will limit customers to four bags at a time of imported jasmine, basmati and long grain white rice.

The warehouse chain caters heavily to small businesses, including restaurants. Sam's Club spokeswoman Kristy Reed said she could not comment on whether the problem was caused by short supplies or by customers stocking up in anticipation of higher prices.

USA Rice Federation spokesman David Coia said there is no rice shortage in the United States.

"It's possible that small restaurants and bodega-type neighborhood stores may be purchasing rice in larger quantities than they do typically to avoid higher prices," Coia said about the warehouse chain restrictions.

A smaller chain, Natick, Mass.-based BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., said it is not imposing limits for now.

Earth Day; Thirty Eight Years On...

Thirty-eight years ago I attended all of the festivities at the first Earth Day celebration. It was clear that the organizers, the press, and politicians didn’t think it would be a big deal, or be well attended.

They were all so wrong. The South Street Seaport in NYC was a struggling little maritime street-of-shops (not-a-museum) area, but on that April day it was a awash with people anxious to learn more about this new concept called saving the planet.

There were tours and lectures on an old galleon, perhaps the Mayflower 2 (I don’t remember and my 16mm films are gone), great food, and exciting activities for kids.

Interestingly the kids had been plugged into the future, they got it, if only the city of NY had jumped on that excitement and instituted recycling in 1970, it would be a way of life by now. But no, they thought it was simply the new fad. You know, like all of us hippies who read the Whole Earth Catalog were subversives and attempting to take over the country,

Isn’t that always the way.

Michael Moore: In my Inbox...

My Vote's for Obama (if I could vote) ...by Michael Moore

Friends,

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

I haven't spoken publicly 'til now as to who I would vote for, primarily for two reasons: 1) Who cares?; and 2) I (and most people I know) don't give a rat's ass whose name is on the ballot in November, as long as there's a picture of JFK and FDR riding a donkey at the top of the ballot, and the word "Democratic" next to the candidate's name.

Seriously, I know so many people who don't care if the name under the Big "D" is Dancer, Prancer, Clinton or Blitzen. It can be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Barry Obama or the Dalai Lama.

Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months, the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely disappointing to downright disgusting. I guess the debate last week was the final straw. I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!

This sleazy attempt to smear Obama was brilliantly explained the following night by Stephen Colbert. He pointed out that if Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing: OBAMA LOVES HITLER!

Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were nuts. Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity. How sad that I would ever have to write those words about you. You have devoted your life to good causes and good deeds. And now to throw it all away for an office you can't win unless you smear the black man so much that the superdelegates cry "Uncle (Tom)" and give it all to you.

Clinton Slams MoveOn & Democratic Activists

This is not good move for Hillary. What if she does win? She'll need all the help from as many groups as possible. Blasting the netroots, MoveOn.org, and Democratic activists is not a good strategic campaign plan. Oh, and then there is the secretly recorded tape for a smoking gun so she can't say it didn't happen.

Chances are, she's having a hissy because MoveOn has endorsed Obama and she thinks it's safe to mouth off and do a bit more trash-talking. Hillary, we are not amused.

At a small closed-door fundraiser after Super Tuesday, Sen. Hillary Clinton blamed what she called the "activist base" of the Democratic Party -- and MoveOn.org in particular -- for many of her electoral defeats, saying activists had "flooded" state caucuses and "intimidated" her supporters, according to an audio recording of the event obtained by The Huffington Post.

"Moveon.org endorsed [Sen. Barack Obama] -- which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down," Clinton said to a meeting of donors. "We have been less successful in caucuses because it brings out the activist base of the Democratic Party. MoveOn didn't even want us to go into Afghanistan. I mean, that's what we're dealing with. And you know they turn out in great numbers. And they are very driven by their view of our positions, and it's primarily national security and foreign policy that drives them. I don't agree with them. They know I don't agree with them. So they flood into these caucuses and dominate them and really intimidate people who actually show up to support me."

Clinton's remarks depart radically from the traditional position of presidential candidates, who in the past have celebrated high levels of turnout by party activists and partisans as a harbinger for their own party's success -- regardless of who is the eventual nominee -- in the general election showdown.

The comments also contradict Clinton's previous statements praising this year's elevated Democratic turnout in primaries and caucuses, and appear to blame her caucus defeats on newly energized grassroots voter groups that she has lauded in the past as "lively participants" in American democracy.

"You've been asking the tough questions," Clinton said in April of last year at a MoveOn-sponsored town hall event. "You've been refusing to back down when any of us who are in political leadership are not living up to the standards that we should set for ourselves... I think you have helped to change the face of American politics for the better... both online, and in the corridors of power."

A Day in the Life: Wonderful Spring Day

And we're not talking Sargent Pepper here. This has been the best spring day I’ve experienced in a very long time.

First, after downing a big glass of OJ and savouring a mug of Sumatran coffee, I made bacon and eggs and an English muffin for breakfast. This is something I haven’t done in almost a year. It was a delicious luxury that greatly enjoyed as I listened to Morning Edition on NPR.

Satisfied and happy I set about running the vacuum through the apartment and cleaning the bathroom (an easy chore here) and worked up a sweat. So…. with the temperature in the mid-70s and already sweaty, I decided to don swim trunks and lie out by the pool in an attempt to put some colour and much-needed vitamin D into this tired old body. No, the pool isn’t open yet, but that didn’t matter. It was the sun I wanted.

So did the hyacinths, tulips, phlox and marigolds coming up and about to bloom. The trees are budding and lilies are breaking through the soil. Colour welcomed, colour following a winter of gray.

After showering (no, I didn’t shave. Hah!) I prepped a recipe for the crock-pot and set it cooking.

I settled in to read a few of my favourite blogs to see what was new and what I'd missed since last night. The video blogs had a few funny clips. Not that they were intensionally funny, if you get my drift. When I downloaded email I was delighted to learn that my friends in Gotham will spend the day with me on my day trip in June.

Dennis and I go back to our childhood neighborhood; the same age and share the same birth date. We lived on the same street separated by 10 identical homes. We spent a lot of time together during summer vacation for years. I haven’t seen him in about 45 years. He now has a theatre company and a long time life-partner, whom I will meet in June, as well.

Dione and I go back to 1958 when we both worked on local radio and appeared on television (black and white back then!) in the NOLA version of American Bandstand. We were part of a dance company that performed “specialty” numbers weekly, usually to a hot tune at the time. (Think Hairspray, only 5 years earlier, and yes, we had a “Negro Saturday – once every three months. Nice, huh.) Anyway, we met up again more recently; in 2005 at the March on Washington to end the war in Iraq. We got to spend a few hours together during and following the march. It was fun, but too short a visit. And although we stay in touch via email, there is nothing like hearing a person’s voice and inflections in a real live conversation.

I’ve just listened to a clip by Sen. Barak Obama as he skewers ABC’s Charlie Gibson and George Stephanapoulos regarding that train wreck billed as a “Debate” by naming all the trivial bullshit questions, (you know, flag lapel pin, his pastor, bitter, and blah blah,) as “Manufactured Political Distractions” and putting those MPDs on notice on the Colbert Report. Funny stuff and a priceless cap to my afternoon. This was one of those days that make life worth living. Perhaps they are so few because if they were plentiful, we wouldn't cherish them as much.

I am now going to prepare a festive cocktail and sip it by the pool in the late afternoon sun. What a delightful way to end the day.

Condi Rice Must Resign!

This video from Robert Greenwald just arrived in my inbox and I am beside myself with rage. I've written about this since Abu Graib, but now that they've been arrogant enough to ADMIT that they signed off on these "enhanced techniques" after repeating over and over that they didn't, wouldn't, couldn't approve of such tactics. Jeebus, this just burns my biscuits. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

So, why is impeachment still off the table? I could never, in my wildest imagination, believe my country would stoop this low, but now all bets are off. They have lied from the beginning of the "I'm a uniter not divider" campaign in 1999. Everything coming out of the executive branch has been nothing more than manipulative untruths and the f&*)( media didn't bother to do their jobs. OK, a few did, but look what happened to them.

My prayer and greatest wish is to see Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice in the dock at the Hague. May it be so... Go here and sign the petition.

A Magical Walk in the Marshes

The walk this morning was like something out of a dream. This is what greeted me from the living room window as I left the apartment. The water is in the center of the photo, but can't be seen. The fog and mist only added ambiance to what I would encounter. Click the photo to see a larger image.

There was a snowy egret wading in the water with a small fish in its beak. A family of ducks; mother with five tiny ones in tow. Then I almost stepped on a turtle - in the mist I thought it was a fat log - but she/he hissed at me just in time. He/she slowly made its way back into the water, not giving me a second thought. I loved it. No pictures of these encounters, it was misting too much and I didn't want to risk damaging the little camera.

When I got back to the apartment I was soaked and sweaty, so I took a shower, shaved and made a cup of coffee. The sun finally burned through the fog and the sky cleared, so I headed out to take care of a few errands. I got back just in time; the heavens opened delivering a wild, loud thunderstorm. I am one happy man this afternoon.

It's time to settle in, prepare some supper and get ready for Torchwood tonight. First, it's 5 o'clock somewhere and time for a martini. Cheers!

The True McCain

This arrived in my inbox this morning. From MoveOn.org and it includes sources:

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don't):

1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1

2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."2

3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.3

4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."4

5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.5

6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.6

7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."7

8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.8

9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."9

10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.10

Larry Craig Offers Support to David Vitter

No, really. Who could make this stuff up? From The Hill:

Embattled Louisiana Sen. David Vitter (R) is getting support from fellow Republicans who say he should not resign over a public sex scandal — including from someone who can speak from experience.

Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was among several GOP senators who say Vitter’s testimony in the “D.C. Madam” prostitution case should not compel his resignation.

“First and foremost, in these kinds of issues, it’s the state and the relationship you have with your state that really determines where you ought to go,” Craig said. “That was certainly my case. The Senate itself wasn’t going to judge me. I would allow the citizens of my state to do so. And there is still strong support there.”

Craig went through his own trial-by-media last year, after his arrest for and guilty plea to soliciting sex from an undercover male officer in a Minneapolis airport.

NY Gov. David Paterson Held Hostage?

No, it's a joke. The Governor of NY David Paterson, was supposed to speak at and accept an award from the NGLTF Awards dinner recently, but he was doing what needed to be done to assure that NY did the right thing and the legislature didn't want to cooperate, so he produced this video which was projected at the event.



This guy is a gem. NY is in good hands.

I'm spent. Working 10 - 12 hours daily is leaving me drained. Following a dinner of leftovers there is a shower and bed in my immediate future.

Details Remain Scarce in Barclay Investigation:

With questions buzzing and investigators working, Cumberland County's two remaining commissioners quietly accepted the resignation today of colleague Bruce Barclay, who is the focus of a rape investigation. No criminal charges have been filed against Barclay, 48, of Monroe Twp., who quit Wednesday after it surfaced that state police are investigating a man's rape allegation against him.

Details on the investigation are sparse because county Judge Kevin A. Hess sealed an affidavit listing allegations police relied on to secure a warrant to search Barclay's Brindle Road home Monday. District Attorney David Freed said the sealing of search warrants is neither routine nor rare. No special steps were taken in the investigation because Barclay is a public official, he said.

A Rare Spring Day

Today is one of those rare spring days. Temperatures are in the upper 60s with a light breeze off the bay. The sea grasses are waving gracefully in that breeze. All the windows are open and it seems that every bird in the immediate area is in some kind of competition for the loudest, prettiest song.

The weather critters insist there will be thunderstorms this afternoon. Though we know how very wrong those critters can be, a nice walk is in my immediate future.

After that, I won’t mind the rain. After the drought of last year we can use the water. The pond has been filling nicely and currently stands at two-thirds capacity, which is great news for the turtles and frogs.

And the air smells sweet this afternoon. I’ll be back.

Wingnuts Rally Round Sally Kern

She's baaaack!

Yeah, well it was only a matter of time before her true colours came shinin' through. So much for her meeting with P-FLAG.
One question: Why are the most visible, vocal representatives at CWA men? I'm just askin' . From PageOneQ:

Pastors and members of Concerned Women for America are heading an upcoming "Free Speech Rally for Sally" in the continuing media battle over a State House representative's controversial anti-gay speech.

"Recently," a press release states, "Rep. Kern has been under attack from radical homosexual activists and their followers over remarks she made regarding the homosexual agenda. Rep. Kern took a Biblical stand against homosexual activism and has refused to back down from her statements despite receiving death threats."

The educator turned public representative has received thousands of phone calls and e-mails, but none has been verified as a legitimate threat.

Statements in the speech, originally given to a private group of Republicans and secretly recorded, include expressing the belief that the "gay agenda," as a "death knell," poses a larger threat to the United States than terrorism, and that such an agenda needed to be treated like a cancer. Rep. Kern also spoke out against pro-gay philanthropists' participation in the political process.

"CWA," the press release continues, "applauds Rep. Kern for continuing to be steadfast and resolute in this fight against the homosexual agenda and for shedding light on the threat it poses to our nation."

"There are certainly those who hate Rep. Kern," says CWA's Policy Director for Cultural Issues Matt Barber. "They've made that perfectly clear with vicious personal attacks and even death threats. But millions of Americans proudly stand alongside Sally Kern and say, 'Thank you. Thank you for boldly standing your ground and for unapologetically defending Biblical Truth.'"

Kern has continued to defend her stances and her First Amendment rights, most recently at a March 27th meeting with a local chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays in her state capitol office. The lawmaker has retained legal counsel.

The rally is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, at 12pm CDT, in the rotunda of the Oklahoma State Building.
