It's a Blogiversary!

And it's Mine!

Today begins the 8th year of this little one bedroom corner of the blogosphere and I must say, it's been quite a ride.

It was the prodding of Ron (the dear gossip) over at Retired in Delaware that finally got me going.  He insisted that others would be interested in what I had to say; that I am a good writer, and blah blah blah.

I've never considered myself a writer.  I write pretty much the way I speak in conversation, so that's really what I do. Some people are driven to distraction by my use of the "comma" since I use it to pause just as I do in natural speech.

When I published the very first post, my old life was crumbling around me, my house was up for sale, the Ex was in the process of building his new house with his new flame, and within the next 4 months I would go from homeowner to homeless.

The Ex took everything (even gifts given to me) and I had nothing. Boxes of books, clothes, CDs, and the PC - that was it. Life was bleak and I was lost and alone for the first time in 30 years.

First move was disaster. Thought by renting a bedroom from a (then) friend, I would be helping him out of financial stress, but it was an ugly setup by the Ex and his (whatever) and I was kicked out without due notice, explanation, or monetary compensation. He kept my money, period.  His karma.

While physically healthy, mentally was another story. I was falling to pieces. I wrote sparingly about those personal trials, mainly because I couldn't believe people treated others so badly and had little regard for their feelings. Anyway, hindsight isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Second move was to a beautiful apartment in the back waters on the marshes near Delaware Bay. Peaceful and healing environment. That place, the jewelry store and then the part-time gig at Dos Locos helped me dig out of some heavy debt, and get through.

The job at the jewelry store and a few early readers kept me closer to sanity and away from the edge of the cliff of the mentally disturbed. Slowly I began to put a new life together and bit by bit, I stepped out of the shadows of the past, let it go and embraced the new places life was taking me. It was time to move on, again.

The third move (2010) into this tiny place in the center of this tiny beach town was the best of the lot, of course.

Fortunately, when the jewelry store closed in 2009, I became employed full time at Dos Locos and, as they say, when one door closes, another one opens. Usually a better one. That was certainly true in my case.

I love living in town, love(d) my job, (miss it terribly) love sharing adventures, silly stories of the quirks of the place and people, and wouldn't change a thing.

The current health situation being the exception.  But, I'm not going there today.

Today is a celebration, of sorts. Over the years bloggers and readers have come and gone and I like to think some who've have hung around and commented through the years, have become like friends.  I've even met some personally (hope to meet more down the road) and they've taught me a lot.  Probably not intentionally, but from these total strangers I've learned a good bit about kindness and generosity, and all through this here web thingy…….

So today I indulge in two units of fresh blood (the blood of an 18-year-old, as they say at the Center) in the hope that I may still be around come the next blogiversary in 2015. It may not be much, but it is something positive to focus on, if you get my drift.

So mote it be.

Blogiversary: Threes, Looking Back, & the Present

Someone mentioned that I seem to like titles with three topics in them.  I never thought about it, but I guess she's right.

As the sixth year of this corner of the Inter-webs kicks off I went back and re-read some of those early posts. Not necessarily a bad thing, but some pretty grim memories (overcome and blessedly forgotten over time) were dredged up in the process.

Six years ago at this time my life was shattering into tiny fragments; many of which would be lost forever, making my life quite the mess. Before OT I wrote another blog about the breakup, reaching out to others in similar situations. It was eventually deleted and this little place was born.

Spent much time in hospital or home recovering from surgery as my 30-year relationship (and Canadian marriage) disintegrated.  A year later I slid from home owner to homeless person in a matter of weeks.

Rejection has played a big role in my life - from parents, siblings, on down. I have no answers.  Never trust another with your entire being/life. No regrets; just a huge mistake.  We live and learn, or we don't live long.

It's been a slow, painful crawl back with more loss along the way - people and things; lightened the load of "things" that weighed me down.  Some were taken away while others were cast aside willingly.  Let someone else show them off, dust them. For 40 years I collected vinyl records that never needed much dusting. Those were taken away, too.  Just as well.

Now there is light in the distance. Dim perhaps, but there. With a little luck the hospital will be paid in full with the April payment.  The dentist will be paid off in June so there may be some of that illusive, notorious gay disposable income I hear so much about. We shall see.

Over these 6 years the phone calls and emails suggesting that I meet for drinks, dinner, or a movie have dried up.  No calls anymore.  It was tiring to continually make excuses for not being available and I was no longer willing to simply repeat (over and over) "there is no money for ________ in the budget.  Oh sure, I would have loved nothing better than to join in for a Happy Hour, Burger Night, or Seafood special with friends.  The idea of dropping $40., $30, or even $20. for an evening out, was unthinkable; still is. They never got the message.

Even today, folks at work will talk about a certain TV show and ask if I had seen it.  For almost 3 years they have been told that I don't have TV service, but it doesn't sink in. Surely, everyone has cable - or something; how could anyone possibly live without it?  Apparently, I can!

Well, if all goes without a hitch, I just might be able to afford basic cable in a couple of months. By that time I will have returned to a 6-day work week, which means extra $$, as well.  At least through September. Hopefully, some of that extra can be set aside for the leaner times of Fall and Winter. I cannot depend on the bureaucracy of Social Security Administration to be forthcoming with benefits checks anytime soon.

That said, there is the possibility of hernia surgery, and the lease is up on this place in May; I don't know if there will be a rent increase in my future. I am not moving house again. Can't afford it physically, emotionally, or financially.  It is what it is.

I've come this far (though not quite sure of the reason) and that little light looks good from here.

There is that Alaskan Cruise/Tour to look forward to, after all.  Now, if I can keep myself healthy - or a reasonable facsimile thereof - that may come to pass.

Over the years I have met (at least in cyberspace) some really good people who share their lives, thoughts, insights and humor on their blogs; occasionally honoring me with a comment here. Funny and supportive,  never judgmental. Some I already call 'friend' and feel it is so. You know who you are. I am blessed by your presence. And I hope to meet all of you in person one day.  Of course, I will need to win the lottery first.

Happy Blogiversary to me.  Cheers!

And so it goes.

Another Belated Blogiversary

Yes, it's true.  I forgot again. This time the same person sent a reminder via email, rather than embarrass me by telling everyone in a posted  comment. (Bless you, BJ. You really ought to write one of these yourself.)

Visiting a few original posts it was alternately fun, scary, and sometimes terrifying. Hard to remember some of those painful steps out from under.  It was a good exercise to read and view ancient history, as well as the progress over the years.

What to say, really? Same Ingredients - Different Vessels. Simple. During the breakup, the Ex said "you're not the same person you were 30 years ago"  and my response was "And thank G*d for that" because at our core selves; we take on and discard habits, ideas, interests, hobbies, and vices as we move through life. We change, inhabit a new environment or vessel. In short, we grow.  That's the reason for this space.  I'm not a writer, but I have things to say and opinions. Being Cajun has been a huge benefit.

This place was set up and furnished at probably the worse time in my life (so far) and because of it, the truly wonderful people I've come to know if only in cyberspace have been instrumental in my journey of healing, getting back on my feet, and keeping my sensa-humah.

It isn't easy to start from scratch following a 30 year relationship when one is over 60 years old.  (I found no guide books to help me out.)  From scratch. From nothing. Some folks read then hung around and finally chose to make themselves known. For that I am grateful and honored to have you out there, but also in here, in my life.

For me this isn't about hits (40K) , or visits (26K), but community and shared experience, wisdom, joy, sorrow, wit, and snark, too.  I am blessed by everyone who visits, comments, and who offer themselves up on their own blogs for all to see - and love. You (and you know who you are) enrich my life daily.

Well, I have to go now.  This beaded gown is giving me an obscene rash and these Joan Crawford "come-fuck-me" pumps are killers!

Oh, Laissez les bons temps rouler, y'all. Happy Mardi Gras!!!

And so begins year five!

It's My Blogiversary!

This little spot on the interwebs celebrates (if that's the correct word) three years of life today.

And this was the very first post:

Funny how some things never change...

Pet Shop Boys Help Celebrate the Blogiversary

This is the video from their soon to be released CD "YES" titled "Love Etc.". It's in HD and the wonderfully catchy lyrics are below the video. These guys just get better and better.

If you’d like to sing along:

Well it’s tough getting on in the world

When the sun doesn’t shine

And a boy needs a girl

It’s about getting out of a rut

You need luck

But you’re stuck and you don’t know how

(Don’t have to be)

A big bucks Hollywood star

(Don’t have to drive)

A super car to get far

(Don’t have to live)

A life of power and wealth

(Don’t have to be)

Beautiful but it helps

(Don’t have to buy)

A house in Beverly Hills

(Don’t have to have)

Your daddy paying the bills

(Don’t have to live)

A life of power and wealth

(Don’t have to be)

Beautiful but it helps

You need more

Than a big blank check to be a lover, or

A gulf stream jet to fly you door to door

Somewhere chic on another shore

You need more (6x)

You need love

You need love

You need love

Too much of anything is never enough

Too much of everything is never enough

Well it’s tough getting on in the world

When the sun doesn’t shine

And a boy needs a girl

It’s about getting out of a rut

You need luck but you’re stuck

and you don’t know how

(Don’t have to be)

A big bucks Hollywood star

(Don’t have to drive)

A super car to get far

(Don’t have to wear)

A smile much colder than ice

(Don’t have to be)

Beautiful, but it’s nice

You need more

Than the girl handwriting on your wall

A chauffeur driven limousine encore

To drive your wife and lover to a whiter ball

You need more (6x)

You need love

I believe that we can achieve the love that we need

I believe, call me naive, but love is for free

(Don’t have to be)

A big bucks Hollywood star

(Don’t have to drive)

A super car to go far

(Don’t have to live)

anekatips.com

A life of power and wealth

(Don’t have to be)

Beautiful but it helps

Beautiful but it helps

Beautiful but it helps

And so it goes.

Happy Blogiversary to Me!

OK, so I'm one day late. March 6, 2007 actually, and this was the very first post that day.

Two Words: "DOUBLE ENTENDRE"

Three words: Isn't this sad?

(Yes well, somethings never go away.)

More later.
