Michael Callen was, for a very long time, the longest living person with HIV/AIDS. The Safe Sex program was his brain child, and along with this song, co-written with Marsha Melamet, together co-wrote "Love Don't Need a Reason" with Peter Allen. This is before the virus ravaged his body.
His book "Surviving AIDS" was great help to me during my time as "buddy" and "caregiver" as I was burning out quickly. Michael was crazy, wild, outspoken, insatiable, and a genius. I still miss him terribly.
And so it goes.

Thanks for sharing that. I had not heard it. Powerful.
ReplyDeleteI have frequently thought of late, that we will not, cannot lose the battles for equality, against AIDS, etc. because we have the music.
Michael had quite a vocal range. I remember when he sang "Glitter and be Gay" from Candide in a cabaret and brought the house down.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people miss him. thank for posting this.
