The Church Fashion Show

As the Cardinals gather in Rome to select a new Pontiff, I couldn't help thinking about this scene from Fellini's Roma. The Nino Rota musical score is a delight.  Fellini got a lot of grief from the church about this scene, but it remained in the final film.  To my sick mind, it is genius.
Enjoy.

And so it goes.

  1. "a pretty girl
    is like a melody..."

that first one reminds me of the taliban.

but yeah, the nuns I had for grade school and high school were all penguins; kinda like the second model.

those cardinal "girls" and the "pope" have expensive taste in dresses, don't they? bought and paid for by the idiots that believe in the "cult".

my sister is one of the cult members, unfortunately. I had the sense to see the lying bastards as they are and split in 1977. I have NEVER regretted that decision either.

  2. The music that accompanied that scene is very lovely and haunting.

The mood of that scene progressed from whimsical to downright creepy. I found the last sequence with the (possibly dead?) pope on the throne in front of the sunburst to be particularly unsettling.

  3. @ Sean: Rota scored many of Fellini's films and this one is up there on top. It was Fellini's job to make the viewer think and see the foolish whimsy in the situations we take too seriously. You were supposed to be unsettled.
@Anne Marie: having been an alter boy, and would be saint, I pole vaulted from the RC church at age 12 and never looked back. Glad you finally did the same. Hugs.

Thanks to you both for the visit.
